FRANCES GOULTON"Education has long been touted as the zone where politics has no place. But after nearly 60 years of schooling experience I know education is driven entirely from a political agenda. And it’s not been ours"
"Today I want to talk about that. I want to talk about what our agenda for education is. When I saw the theme of this Hui was Te Whakauu i te Mana Motuhake, I was filled with joy because I could talk about the very thing that has filled my waking hours over many years". "My view, being shaped by my experiences, as a wahine, grandmother, mother, wife, daughter, aunty, niece, cousin, kaikaranga, kaimahi for my iwi and hapuu, kaiako - educator, researcher, artist, te reo matatini expert, and company director, for example" "I hope that by sharing some of my experiences you may gain greater insights into your own views of what Mana Motuhake means to you, and what that means in relation to the position you hold in your sphere of influence in the world". |

TINA NGATAPĀ TŪWATAWATA OF THE MIND
A Ngati Porou wāhine and mother of two, Tina's work involves advocacy for environmental, Indigenous and human rights. This includes local, national and international initiatives that highlight the role of settler colonialism in transnational issues such as climate change, waste pollution, and pandemics. In 2019 Tina published Kia Mau: Resisting Colonial Fictions, a collection of essays which explore the application of the Doctrine of Discovery in Aotearoa. In the same year she also co-founded the award-winning Manaaki Matakaoa program, a community centered, flaxroots oranga service that rallied the community to rise to the challenges of extreme isolation and limited health infrastructure. She is now embarking on her PhD regarding the Doctrine of Discovery in Aotearoa, how it continues to drive colonial injustice, and models for dismantling its racist legacy. Tina will be discussing the protection of the "Pā Tūwatawata of the Mind" - The importance of actively protecting the minds from colonial fictions that function to uphold colonial domination. This will include an overview of modern intellectualism and its roots in colonial empire-building, and a debunking of colonial myths that have arisen from that history. |
