PROVIDING GOVERNANCE SUPPORT FOR KURA MĀORI & SCHOOLS
COLIN RANGI
Most of my professional and personal experiences have been in the education field as a teacher, Principal, Māori Adviser (Te Tai Tokerau), University Lecturer, then came home to Taupō to manage 'Hei Ara Kōkiri' an iwi education partnership with the Ministry of Education. After its closure I chose to work as a consultant to help improve educational achievement especially for Māori. This gave me the opportunity to work in the governance space for Ministry of Education and NZSTA.
My main area of work for the past nine years has been in Statutory Intervention, as a Commissioner and Limited Statutory Manager, providing governance support, primarily for Kura Kaupapa Māori, Kura ā Iwi, Te Kura Māori ā Rohe and Kura Mana Māori settings. My specific focus in working with kura has been to help build governance knowledge for boards in support of their tumuaki, staff and whānau.
Finally I have had the privilege to work for my iwi and hapū as the Deputy Chair of our Treaty Claims, supporting our Chair, Te Ariki Tumu Te Heuheu, to achieve a settlement in 2017 with the Crown. I continue to provide advisory support to the Ariki.
In looking back on my professional and personal experience, the common element in all of my work has been to help my iwi and others make better education decisions to achieve our vision for our hāpori.
Nōku te hōnore ki te tautoko i tēnei kaupapa o Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa.
